Knowledge of Tibb

Knowledge of Tibb

Imaam Shaafi’ (Rahmatullahi alaih) would lament over Muslims not inculcating expertise in Ilmut Tibb [knowledge of medicine/the art of healing] and leaving a third of knowledge in this way to the Yahood and Nasaara.

[The other two thirds referred to are knowledge of Deen and knowledge of the dunya. A person is in need of these three for his survival and prosperous stay on earth. He requires knowledge of the Deen for the blessings of this life and salvation in the Aakhirah, he requires knowledge of this world, that is knowledge of world-related professions and occupations to earn a livelihood and to carry out his mundane activities, and he requires knowledge of physical health to maintain, nourish and strengthen his body, and to treat himself when taking ill.

Imaam Shaafi’ (Rahmatullahi alaih) thus expressed his regret that Muslims have left this third of knowledge to non-muslims thus making Muslims dependant on the kufaar for a third of life’s needs.

It is also essential to mention here that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has taught us through his noble and beautiful way of life how to care for and foster our physical health. Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) also provided guidance in health-related matters and remedies to certain illnesses. For this reason, the Muhadditheen include in their compilations, Kitaabut Tibb – the Book of Healing. By implementing these health-related teachings of Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) amongst which are: regular fasting, consuming wholesome and halaal foods, never filling the stomach, taking honey, being physically active, etc., etc. We will find our health in outstanding condition and the need to run to doctors and kuffaar medical practitioners will never arise, Insha-Allah. May Allah Ta’ala grant us the taufeeq to truly appreciate the wonderful teachings of the Sunnah.]

Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:

“Indeed the first of what will be asked about on the Day of Judgment – meaning the slave (of Allah) being questioned about the favors – is that it will be said to him: ‘Did We not make your body, health, and give you of cool water to drink?’”
