THE LINK BETWEEN MODESTY AND PERSEVERANCE IN SALAAH

It has been mentioned that there was a young man who was sentenced for a lengthy period for a heinous crime. His family was committed to Islam and he too was a practicing Muslim. He was asked what was it that made him slip into crime? The young man responded that as soon as started missing his Salaah; he became vulnerable to sinning excessively to the extent that it weakened his Īmān. The effect of neglecting his Salaah made him succumb to temptations and desires.

The verse of Surah Maryam (Verse 59) clearly defined his plight:

فخلف من بعدهم خلف أضاعوا الصلاة واتبعوا الشهوات فسوف يلقون غيا

'So came after them successors who lost the prayers and followed their desires so they will meet evil.'

We need to clearly understand that if we do not establish and be steadfast on Salaah, we will succumb to temptations and involve ourselves in more evil. Salaah is the spiritual fort of modesty. Experience has shown that negligence in Salaah makes us more blatant in rebelling against the laws of Allah Ta'ala جل جلاله. Many people who have been incarcerated for crimes have admitted that the primary factor for their destruction was the abandonment of Salaah. The Holy Qur'an states:

إن الصلاة تنهى عن الفحشاء والمنكر

'Indeed the Salaah stops you from immorality and evil.'

Our pious predecessors have advised that Salaah is that spiritual nourishment which keeps the Rooh alive. Salaah is the essence of our existence; we cannot survive without it.

THE SUNNAH OF LOOKING AFTER ONES HOUSEHOLD

Hakim bin Hizam Radiallahu Anhu reported Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam having said this:

The most excellent Sadaqa or the best of Sadaqa is that after giving which the (giver) remains rich and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin from the members of your household.

Muslim Shareef

It has been narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Umar that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said:

Beware! every one of you is a shepherd and everyone is answerable with regard to his flock. The Caliph is a shepherd over the people and shall be questioned about his. A man is a guardian over the members of his family and shall be questioned about. A woman is a guardian over the household of her husband and his children and shall be questioned about them. A slave is a guardian over the property of his master and shall be questioned about. Beware, every one of you is a guardian and every one of you shall be questioned with regard to his trust.

Muslim Shareef

Narrated Qatada Radiallahu Anhu

Anas Radiallahu Anhu  went to Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam with barley bread having some dissolved fat on it. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam had mortgaged his armor to a Jew in Medina and took from him some barley for his family. Anas Radiallahu Anhu heard him saying, "The household of Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) did not possess even a single Sa (2.5kg) of wheat or food grains for the evening meal, although he has nine wives to look after."

Bukhari Shareef

Al-Aswad Radiallahu Anhu said, "I asked 'A'isha Radiallahu Anha, may Allah be pleased with her, 'What did Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam do when he was with his family?' She replied, 'He would do chores for his family, and when it was time for the prayer, he would go out.'"

Hisham Radiallahu Anhu said, "I asked 'A'isha Radiallahu Anha, 'What did Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam do in his house?' She replied, 'He did what one of you would do in his house. He mended sandals and patched garments and sewed."

'Amra Radiallahu Anhu reported that 'A'isha Radiallahu Anha was asked, "What did Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam do in his house?" She replied, "He was a man like other men. He removed the fleas from his garment and milked his sheep."
