When you see a person living comfortably, eating and drinking well, living with honour and respect, and upon seeing all this you begin to "burn" within you, begin to have hatred for him or become happy when he experiences any lapse - then this is known as hasad (jealousy or envy). This is a very evil characteristic and is also sinful. Such a person passes his entire life in bitterness. In other words, his worldly life and his Deeni life are both abhorrent and unpleasant. Great efforts therefore have to be made in order to come out from this great calamity.
The first cure for this is that the person should think to himself that "by my envying him, I am causing harm to myself and no harm whatsoever is befalling him. The harm that it is causing me and my loss is that all my good deeds are being wiped out." This has been deduced from a Hadith in which it is mentioned that hasad devours good deeds just as fire devours dry wood. The reason for this is that this person is indirectly forwarding an objection to Allah by saying (indirectly): "so-and-so person does not deserve those bounties. Why did You give him these bounties?" If someone raises an objection to Allah in such a manner, how serious a sin it will be?
Imaam Shaafi’ (Rahmatullahi alaih) said: “Just as sight has a limit and it is ineffective beyond that point, similarly the aql [intelligence] also has a limit and further than that it is useless.” Issues such as Taqdeer and the Mutashaabihaat Aayaat [the allegorical verses of the Qur’aan] should not be probed. Mans’ intelligence is finite. It cannot comprehend infinite issues. We cannot encompass Allah Ta’ala in His Zaat and Sifaat –Being and Attributes. It is therefore moronic to delve into these issues. This is the import of Hazrat Imaam Shaafi’s statement. And, Allah Ta’ala knows best.
Q. What does the Shariah say about a Muslim brother who fights, swears and charges a fellow Muslim brother with the SAPS?
A. We are not aware of the circumstances of the dispute. Nevertheless, to fight and swear Muslims for base motives and out of wickedness are haraam and severely punishable. If a dispute develops between two Muslim brothers then the Qur’aan instructs us to settle the matter with Muslim-arbitration. The party refusing to allow for a Muslim-arbitration process is condemned in the Qur’aan.
Imaam Shaafi’ (Rahmatullahi alaih) said: “The position of ijma’ is greater than khabr-e-waahid.” [Ijma’ in the context of Imaam Shaafi’s statement, is the unanimity of the Sahaabah or Taabi’een on an issue, such as the ijma’ of the Sahaabah on twenty rakaats Taraaweeh Salaat. Khabr Waahid is a Hadeeth which has a single narrator in any stage of its transmission.]

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu said:
"Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam used to encourage (us) to pray Qiyam (Taraaweeh) during Ramadan, without insisting on that, and he said: 'Whoever spends the nights of Ramadan in prayer (Qiyam) out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins'
