CLARIFICATION ON THE INJUNCTION OF JIHAAD

QUESTION
A certain Mufti said in one of his speeches, that the verses in the Quran that speak about jihad are not directed to Muslims of today. Instead, these were historical accounts of the battles of Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and were meant for the Sahaaba in those times. Therefore, we cannot fight (wage jihaad) against the kuffar in today’s times.

ANSWER
Today there are many claimants to knowledge who have big titles against their names but are, in reality, devoid of any real, constructive knowledge of Islam. These people then proceed to broach sensitive issues and court controversy in order to attract attention and be spoken about. This is self-aggrandisement at the expense of Deen. Among the signs of Qiyamat mentioned by Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), one is that people will earn Dunya through Deen. In other words, they will use the Deen of Allah to earn worldly wealth, fame, and name. It’s all about projecting one’s own image, attempting to garner admiration and adulation. May Allah Ta’ala protect us from such misleading modernists, aameen

If this person was really a Mufti and had some connection to Fiqh, he must surely be aware of the lengthy chapters in the books of Fiqh that discuss jihad. Books have been written on Siyar, which is another name for warfare in Islam, and on Jihaad. Even an intermediary student in the Aalim course can tell us this. So, what nonsense is this person uttering?
The books of hadeeth contain hundreds of ahadeeth on the virtues of jihaad, the rules and conditions of jihaad, as well as strategies to be adopted when waging war against the kuffar.
There are numerous verses in the Quran-e-Kareem that speak of jihaad, and that command Muslims to wage jihaad. These verses are not related to the battles of Badr, Uhud, etc that were fought on the time of Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). These aayaat form the basis of the Islamic injunction of Jihaad.

This individual has either deliberately ignored the entire corpus of Islamic texts on Jihaad to appease the kuffar, or he is an absolute ignoramus who babbles statements of such stupidity.

In summary, Jihaad is an inseparable injunction of Islam that will remain as such till doomsday. Of course, like any other faradh injunction, jihaad is regulated by rules and conditions. It is not an injunction that can be implemented just randomly and haphazardly. This is a highly constructive and systematic practice of Shariah, and this is why we find elaborate writings by the Fuqaha on this topic.

Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Jihaad will continue till the Day of Judgment; neither the justice of a just ruler, nor the injustice of an unjust ruler shall stop it.”
