May a woman travel less than 77 kilometers without a mehram?

Question: I heard that it is permissible for a woman to travel without a mehram if it is less than 77 kilometers. Is this true?
Answer: There are Ahadeeth for both cases. Whether the woman is travelling 77 km or not, she must have a mehram. It is a major sin to travel without her male mehram.
