Imaam Shaafi’s Memorization of the Qur’aan and Hadeeth

at a Young Age

Imaam Shaafi’ (Rahmatullahi alaih) said, “I memorized the Qur’aan Majeed at the age of seven and at the age of ten I memorized the Muwatta.”

Muwatta is the Hadeeth compilation of Imaam Maalik (Rahmatullahi alaih). It was the most famous and sought after Hadeeth compilation of the time.

The Muwatta of Imaam Maalik consists of 1720 Ahadeeth and Aathaar (Traditions of Rasoolullah, Sallallahu alayhi wasallam and the Sahaabah, Radhiyallahu anhum), whilst the Qur’aan Kareem consists of more than 6600 Aayaat. This shows the phenomenal memory Imaam Shaafi’ (Rahmatullahi alaih) possessed from childhood.
