When Does Talaaq-e-Raj’i Iddat Commence?

Q. My husband has given me Talaaq e Raj’ee. I want to know whether I sit in Iddat from the time he moves out or from the time of the Talaaq? Also, four days after the Talaaq he made nikaah to another women. Would that mean that we can never reconcile?
A. Iddat begins the exact time the talaaq is issued. The moment the husband pronounces talaaq or writes out a talaaq to his wife her iddat commences. In view of him issuing only one Talaaq Raj’i it is still possible to reconcile and he can keep you as his wife. However, if he does not make raj’at (take you back) then the nikaah terminates upon expiry of your iddat.
