In preparation for a journey to Makkah Mukarramah, Imaam Shaafi’ gave the washerman his expensive Baghdaadi garment to wash. The washerman’s shop burnt out and with it the garment.
The washerman came along with some people to ask Imaam Shaafi’ for respite in paying back the price of the garment. Imaam Shaafi’ said: “In this mas-alah, Ulama differ and there is some detail. I pardon all this loss of yours.”
Although some Ulama are of the view that the washerman was responsible for the loss of the garment, Imaam Shaafi’ differed. He did not claim any compensation for the loss of the expensive garment by utilizing the fatwa of other Ulama
