Caution before Using Medication

“For strengthening the memory I used lubaan [dried gum from frankincense] for a year. The side effect I experienced, however, was that for a year I suffered with jaryaan damm.” (Imaam Shaafi’)

Literally jaryaan damm means: bleeding, or oozing of blood. Perhaps the pathological condition of heamaturia is referred to, that is the presence of blood in urine. In any case, the lesson from this is that before taking medication one should ascertain the side-effects of the medication and if the medication is conducive to one’s condition. Observing correct dosage is also vital. An experienced practitioner should be consulted.
