Imaam Shaafi’ (Rahmatullahi alaih) said: “Just as sight has a limit and it is ineffective beyond that point, similarly the aql [intelligence] also has a limit and further than that it is useless.” Issues such as Taqdeer and the Mutashaabihaat Aayaat [the allegorical verses of the Qur’aan] should not be probed. Mans’ intelligence is finite. It cannot comprehend infinite issues. We cannot encompass Allah Ta’ala in His Zaat and Sifaat –Being and Attributes. It is therefore moronic to delve into these issues. This is the import of Hazrat Imaam Shaafi’s statement. And, Allah Ta’ala knows best.
