WEEPING IN DUAA

Sheikhul Hadīth Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya Sahib رحمه الله has written in his Aap Beeti; “During my lifetime, I have never heard anyone weeping so much in duaa before Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله in the latter part of the night as I have heard Hazrat Moulana Hussain Ahmed Madanī رحمه الله and my respected father (Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Yahya Sahib رحمه الله). Very often, inspite of my deep sleep, I used to be awoken by this profuse crying. Hazrat Madanī رحمه الله would recite lamentations with so much pain and sorrow. I was unacquainted with Hindi and could not understand, but the wailing and crying still echoes in my ears. It was almost like a child who was receiving a hiding and is crying. As brave and courageous as he was, I have not seen (this type of crying) in any of my elders.”

After making duaa, Hazrat Madanī رحمه الله would then engage in abundant Istighfaar. It was his habit to keep his tasbeeh in his hand & place his handkerchief before him. This was a scene worth witnessing. He would sob like a child and keep on reciting;

استغفر الله الذي لا اله الا هو الحي القيوم و اتوب اليه

and with his handkerchief, he would keep on wiping his tears. In this vein he would also recite some very inspiring poems in Urdu or Persian. This would continue until Fajr. This distinguishing feature of the lives of the Sahaba رضوان الله عليهم اجمعين which the Holy Qur’ān speaks about:

وبالاسحار هم يستغفرون

‘During the last portion of the night they seek forgiveness (from Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله).’ Undoubtedly, this temperament could be seen in the life of Sheikhul Islam Hazrat Moulana Hussain Ahmed Madanī Sahib رحمه الله.

REFLECTIONS

At this juncture, we should carefully reflect on our situation and attitude towards the institution of duaa. We perform our Salaah haphazardly and do not even make the time in our routine to ask of Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله for our needs. As slaves, we have to display submission and humility in pleading unto our Rabb to hear our cries and respond to our supplications. Yaa Rabb! Many of us have adopted an attitude of arrogance and independence towards the institution of duaa. And we then complain that our duaas are not accepted?

It is essential that we reform our attitude and identify with the noble trait of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم; when he used to make duaa, a sound would emanate from his chest like the that of a boiling kettle. A duaa is never rejected. When will the Ummah turn to Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله with tears in their eyes to secure His mercy?
