It was narrated from Umm Salamah (Radhiyallahu Anha) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “You refer your disputes to me and I am only human. Perhaps some of you may be more eloquent in presenting your case than others, so I rule in your favour because of what I hear from you. If I pass a judgement in favour of one of you that detracts from his brother’s rights, then he should not take it, because it is a piece of fire that is given to him which he will bring forth on the Day Resurrection.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 2318, Book 13, Hadith 11)

Another wonderful reminder of the rights of others. We cannot stress it enough how important it is to know your rights and the rights of others, so you can fulfil your obligations to yourself, your families and to society. Do not take from the rights of someone else and avoid the piece of fire mentioned in this Hadith. If you can forgive others when there is a dispute, then your reward is with your Lord. If not, then ensure the process is fair and not to unnecessarily take from someone else simply because they couldn’t present their argument as well as you
