Brief History of Umamah Al-Bahili رضي الله عنه

He was born in the year 21 before the migration. This is a more accurate opinion because during the event of Hujjatul Wida, he was asked about his age and he replied that he was 30 years old. This is also agreed by al-Bukhari in his book “Tarikh al-Kabir” from a network that is hasan or sahih.

He heard many hadiths from Rasulullah ﷺ and narrated hadiths from Saiyidina Umar Ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه, Saiyidina Uthman Ibn Affan Rرضي الله عنه, Saiyidina Ali Ibn Abu Talib رضي الله عنه, Abu Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah رضي الله عنه, Mu’az bin Jabal رضي الله عنه and other companions.

He lived during the time of Rasulullah ﷺ and also during the reign of al-Khalifah ‘ar-Rasyidin and even during the reign of the Bani Umayyah until the 5th caliph. He was also one of the 1400 companions involved in the treaty under a tree named Bai’ah ar-Ridhwan. He also participated in many wars.

Various karamah from Allah given to the companions mentioned in the history of Islam where the stories are strengthened by chains that are not mixed with doubt. The karamah of Allah given to Abu Umamah Al-Bahili  has caused his people to be astonished with amazement. So they immediately embraced the religion of Islam preached by Abu Umamah Al Bahili رضي الله عنه, their hearts were open to receive the Divine light, even though before that their hearts were shackled by the teachings of ignorance which contained misguidance and suspicion only.

As for the reason why the people of Abu Umamah Al Bahili رضي الله عنه converted to Islam is because one day Suday Ibn Ajlan who is commonly called Abu Umamah Al Bahili RA came to his people and invited them to worship Allah . Abu Umamah Al Bahili رضي الله عنه narrates the events that took place when he was with his shepherds. He said: “When I came to my people, they fed their goats, milked them and drank them.

When they saw my arrival, they said: “Welcome, O Suday Ibn Ajlan, we have heard that you have inclined towards Rasulullah ﷺ.” I replied: “No, but I have believed in Allah and Rasulullah ﷺ has sent me to you to show Islam to you.”

While I was with them, suddenly they served a container containing blood, and then they gathered around it. They said to me: “O Suday Ibn Ajlan, come here.” I said to them: “Woe to you! I have come to you as a messenger from the person who forbade you from this kind of food except the one slaughtered as commanded by Allah . ”

They asked: “How does His word sound?”

My answer. A Qur’anic verse has been revealed which explains the forbidden food: “It is forbidden for you (to eat) carcasses, blood, pork, (animal meat) slaughtered in the name of Allah, (choked), beaten, fallen, horned, pierced by wild beasts unless you have slaughtered them, and (forbidden to) slaughtered for idols. ”

(Al-Maidah: 3)

Then I invited them to Islam, but they refused, when I was thirsty I said to them: “Give me a drink of water, I am really thirsty.” They said: “No, we will let you die of thirst.” After that I wrapped my head in a turban then I slept under the the scorching heat of the sun and I let them eat blood.

Suddenly in my sleep I saw someone come to me carrying a container made of glass; I have never seen such a good container. Inside is a refreshing drink I have never had in the world. I took the container and immediately drank it until I felt full. After drinking, I woke up. For Allah’s sake since then I have never been thirsty at all.

When I was full, one of them said to them: “One of your families has come to you, why do you not feed him?” So they came to me with a glass of milk; then I said to them: “I do not need this drink anymore.” Then I showed my full stomach to them, so that they finally converted to Islam. “They abandoned their idols and converted to Islam. They converted to Islam with a heart longing for the Divine light and the purity of Islam.

Abu Umamah Al Bahili رضي الله عنه was one of the companions of Rasulullah ﷺ who was chosen by Islam to convey the rays of Islam, he learned Islam from Rasulullah ﷺ and he carried out what was taught to him with full obedience and earnestness.
