Ikhlaas – Part 1 (By Hakeemul Ummat Moulana Thanwi (rahmatullahi alayh)

Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:
“Allah Ta’ala does not look at your facial appearances and your wealth. He does, however, look at your intentions and your actions.”
In this Hadeeth, Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has pin-pointed the thing which Haq Ta’ala looks at, though people do not look at it, and he has furthermore pin-pointed the thing which Haq Ta’ala does not look at, though people look at it.
The reason for exclusive mention of “facial appearance and wealth”, whereas there are other things in the world which are also not looked at, is that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) only mentions those things which are necessary and in which there is widespread indulgence. He does not speak about things which are not necessary and in which there isn’t widespread indulgence.
Shaari’ (Alaihis Salaam) [The Bearer of the Shariat – Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam] treats those sicknesses of ours which are pandemic.
Thus, in this Hadeeth Shareef cure for a sickness which has become a pandemic is mentioned. The sickness is that people have focussed their attention to such a thing which is not looked at by the Creator at all, and they have turned their gazes away from such a thing which the Creator looks at. Therefore, it was necessary to caution over this error so that it be treated.
This is also the reason for us selecting this Hadeeth, as we see that this sickness [of engrossment with physical beauty and craving for wealth] has afflicted the general public.
People’s focus of attention is physical looks and material possessions, whilst Haq Ta’ala’s Gaze is not on that. Haq Ta’ala’s Gaze is on intentions and actions. People do not look at these. This is a clear conflict with Allah Ta’ala, Nauthu Billahi min thaalik [We seek Allah’s protection from that].
