Once Hazrat Bilal (Radhiyallahu Anhu) came to meet Hazrat Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu). As soon as Bilal (Radhiyallahu Anhu) entered through the door, Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu) stood up, left his seat, folded his hands, and stood in the corner waiting for Hazrat Bilal. Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu), who did not care about Caesar and Kisra, stood humbly in the corner people began to ask, “Umar, who is this person for whom you show such respect?” Hazrat Umar replied Our Imam and Hazrat Bilal (Radhiyallahu Anhu) approached. Seeing Hazrat Umar leaving his seat from him he was in tears and said “O Al Farooq, Oh Our Caliph

O Ameer-ul-Mumineen, what are you doing?” Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu) took his arm and made him sit on his seat. Bilal (Radhiyallahu Anhu) said, “I am a slave, I don’t even know the manners to sit on such chairs. I am the son of a poor mother, the child of a slave father.”

Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu) replied, “Bilal, you were a slave, but since you became a slave of Muhammad e Mustafa (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), you have become our leader. You are now the leader of the Ummah of the Messenger of Allah. I remember the day when Mecca was conquered, the idols were broken, and despite the presence of great chiefs, my Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, ‘Tell Bilal to climb the roof of the Kaaba and give the call to prayer.’ People suggested giving this duty to someone else, but the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, ‘Be silent. If Bilal can give the call to prayer after being beaten at Badr, if he can give the call to prayer when stones rained on him at Uhud, if he can give the call to prayer while being hit with stones in the scorching deserts, then call Bilal.’

“Today, if Allah has honoured us, should I not honour Bilal? No one will climb up, not even

Abu Bakr (Radhiyallahu Anhu), not even Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu), not even Uthman or Ali (Radhiyallahu Anhu), Talha, and Zubair (Radhiyallahu Anhu) will stay below. Today, this Abyssinian slave will climb the roof of the Kaaba, and I will tell the world that true honour lies with those who become the slaves of the Messenger of Allah
