Q. Zaid exchanges a 10 rand note with Bakr for two R5 coins. Bakr hands over one R5 coin and says that he will give the other R5 coin later. Is this permissible in the Shariah?
A. An exchange of this nature should be completed before the parties separate. It is not permissible to delay the full payment. This also comes within the scope of haraam riba. The exchange should be made when Bakr has both R5 coins at hand. Alternately, the balance of R5 could be settled there and then with R2, R1 and other coins.
