Verse 129 of Surah Baqarah
Ibraheem (Alaihis Salaam) Made Du’aa:
“O our Rabb! Send to them a Rasool (who is) from them to recite to them Your Aayaat, to teach them the Kitaab and how to understand correctly, and to purify them (from pagan thoughts and actions with the Tilaawat and Ta’leem of the Kitaab). Verily You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.”
Commentary: Ibraheem (Alaihis Salaam) supplicated: “O Allah! Send a Messenger from our progeny who bears the qualifications of relating to these people Your Ahkaam, he teaches them the Kitaab and Hikmat and he reforms them from base attributes. Verily you have the power and You are wise. You do things in conformity to wisdom. Since fulfilment of this supplication is in the best of interests, therefore do accept it.”
From the translation of the Aayat you would have come to know that three qualifications of the Rasool are mentioned. The Rasool is our Nabi, Sayyidina Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) because those who supplicated were Hazrat Ibraheem and Hazrat Isma’eel (Alaihimas Salaam). Therefore, it follows that the Rasool should be from the progeny of both. Although besides Rasoolullah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) there were many other Ambiya from the progeny of Hazrat Ibraheem (Alaihis Salaam), however, they were from the offspring of Hazrat Is-haaq (Alaihis Salaam). From the offspring of Hazrat Isma’eel (Alaihis Salaam) there was only Sayyidina Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). Therefore, only he can be meant.
The purport of relating this episode is that, “O Listeners! Understand that these are the essential issues. Hazrat Ibraheem (Alaihis Salaam) understood their importance and made Du’aa for these.”
Now understand further what these essential items are. In detail these are three; Tilaawat, Ta’leem and Tazkiyah (Tarbiyat). Concisely these are one thing – the Deen. All these three items are part of Deen. The Deen is constructed of two things. One is Ilm and the other is Amal. Tilaawat and Ta’leem allude to Ilm whilst Tazkiyah alludes to Amal. The summary therefore is that, “O Listener! There are two things worth taking care of; Ilm and Amal. These are the things Ibraheem (Alaihis Salaam) cared about.” (Ashrafut Tafaaseer)
