The Student of Deen and Poverty

Imaam Shaafi’ (Rahmatullahi alaih) said: “A true Taalib-e-Ilm (Student of Deen) is invariably poor.” Imaam Rabee’ [A senior student of Imaam Shaafi’] asked: “If a person has average wealth, he also?” Imaam Shaafi’ replied, “He also.”

A true Student of Deen engrosses himself in searching for Ilm and rectification of his A’maal. He neither has the time to hunt for the dunya nor any inclination to hoard wealth. He thus lacks the riches of the dunya. But Allah Ta’ala looks after his needs and fulfils those needs in wonderful and mysterious ways.
