Good Health and Free Time

Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “Two blessings are such that many people are deceived regarding them, good health and leisure time.”

(Mishkat)

Commentary:

Man labours under the grave misconception that he will always remain sound and healthy, he hopes and wishes that old age never dawns, and pines to feel younger as every day passes. But nay, everyday that melts away takes a man closer to old age, closer to senility, closer to the grave. It is the handiwork of Shaytaan that drives mans thoughts, making him feel ever younger and unmindful of death. However no sooner does a person fall ill and becomes helpless or immobile then sighs of remorse can be heard, “If only I had taken heed and spent my good health in virtuous actions which I cannot perform today.”

Similar is the case of free and leisure time. When one is unoccupied, hours on end will be wiled away in gross futility and unmindfulness. A person feels that these moments of freedom and easiness will always accompany him.

But how beguiled is he, for no sooner do responsibility and occupation overcome him, he begins to scrounge for those precious seconds and now rues those minutes and hours which he could have utilised constructively for the benefit of this world and the Hereafter.
