CNN: Half of the Qassam Brigades have rebuilt their combat capabilities
Washington – Ma’an – A data analysis by the American CNN network showed on Monday that nearly half of the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, has amazingly rebuilt some of its combat capabilities and continued on the battlefield, despite the passage of more than 9 months since the Israeli attack on the Gazza Strip.
The report quoted American military experts as saying that Israel’s method of war, which was characterised by a harsh bombing campaign and the absence of a post-war plan, helped encourage Hamas to re-emerge.
A senior Israeli officer told the network that the army would enter any place where Hamas raised its head, but he doubted that this game could continue forever.
A retired senior Israeli officer said that the movement began a recruitment process 3 or 4 months ago, which included several thousand, noting that the biggest difficulty facing Hamas is not at the level of fighters, but at the level of leaders, some of whom are not easy to replace.
CNN also said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement that victory over Hamas is close is contradicted by facts on the ground, including analysis of ongoing military operations, captured images, and interviews with experts and eyewitnesses.
The New York Times quoted analysts as saying that the recent blows to Hamas, including the assassination of its political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in the capital, Tehran, may be a short-term setback for the movement, but not enough to prevent it from re-emerging healthy, and perhaps more radical and politically stronger.
Regional analysts and observers in contact with Hamas leaders see the movement’s setbacks as offering Israel a short-term victory, but not a long-term strategic success.
