In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his family, and his companions.

This is a reflection on one of the signs of the Hour: al-Harj – widespread killing and chaos. I had initially titled it Climbing the Ranks and then The Era of Harj, because the narrations and prophetic signs it contains mirror the very reality we live in today. May Allah forgive the writer, the reader, and all those who pass it along. Āmīn.

The Foundational Hadith

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The Hour will not come until two large groups fight, and their claim is one; until about thirty Dajjals (liars) appear, each claiming he is a prophet; until knowledge is lifted, earthquakes become frequent, time becomes short, tribulations (fitan) appear, and killing (al-Harj) spreads; until wealth overflows among you and becomes abundant but no one will accept it; until people compete in constructing buildings; until a man passes by the grave of another and says, ‘Would that I were in his place’; until the sun rises from the west, so when people see it they will believe, but that is the time when faith will not benefit those who did not believe before; and until two men spread out a cloth between them but do not complete the sale, nor fold it up; until a man milks his animal but does not drink from it; until a man prepares water but does not use it; until a man prepares food but does not eat from it.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Fitan, Hadith 7121

The Meaning of “al-Harj”

The Prophet ﷺ himself explained the meaning of al-Harj when the Companions asked about it.

“It is killing.”

We are living through an era in which killing is rampant. The taking of life has become normalised across the world, to the point where news of death, war, murder, and bloodshed often passes without surprise. The sanctity of human life has been forgotten by many.

Signs That Have Been Fulfilled Before Our Eyes

1. The Disappearance of Knowledge and the Rise of Ignorance

Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Knowledge will be taken away, ignorance will be widespread, tribulations will increase, and killing will become common.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

Today, information is available at the touch of a button, yet true knowledge is scarce. Despite vast educational opportunities, ignorance of Allah, His commands, and the purpose of life has become widespread. The condition of the Ummah itself bears witness to this reality.

2. Shortened Time, Fewer Deeds, and Intensified Greed

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Time will contract, deeds will diminish, miserliness will be widespread, and killing (al-Harj) will become rampant.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari

People now live at astonishing speed. Technology has removed many worldly burdens, yet blessings have been removed from time. Days pass quickly, opportunities for worship are neglected, and greed increasingly governs human behaviour.

3. Proliferation of Qur’an Reciters and Scarcity of Scholars

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“There will be many Qur’an reciters but few jurists; knowledge will be taken away, and killing will become widespread.”

— Reported by al-Tabarani

Today, many recite the Qur’an beautifully and with precision. Yet deep understanding, sincerity, and implementation are often lacking. The balance between recitation and understanding has weakened, and genuine scholarship has become increasingly rare.

4. Competition in Building

Among the signs of the Hour is:

“When the barefooted, naked, poor shepherds compete in constructing tall buildings.”

What was once a prophecy is now a reality witnessed across the globe. Nations compete to erect taller towers, grander skyscrapers, and more extravagant developments. Architectural achievements are celebrated, while human suffering and poverty often remain neglected.

5. People Wishing for Death

The Prophet ﷺ foretold:

“A man will pass by the grave of another and say: ‘Would that I were in his place.’”

This is not the wish of the righteous longing to meet Allah; rather, it describes a person overwhelmed by trials, hardship, confusion, and despair. Such sentiments are increasingly heard in our time as people struggle under the weight of personal and societal difficulties.

6. Arabia Returning to Meadows and Rivers

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The Hour will not come until the land of the Arabs returns to being meadows and rivers.”

— Sahih Muslim

Environmental changes visible in parts of the Arabian Peninsula remind believers of this remarkable prophecy. Lands once known primarily for their barrenness have witnessed increasing greenery and rainfall.

7. Marketplaces Converge and Falsehood Spreads

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Fitan will appear, lying will become widespread, markets will draw close, time will shorten, and killing will increase.”

— Reported by Imam Ahmad and Muslim

Trade is now instantaneous. A person can purchase goods from the other side of the world within minutes. Marketplaces have become global and constantly accessible. Alongside this convenience, dishonesty, misinformation, and falsehood have spread widely through media, technology, and social platforms.

Advice for the Believer During the Era of Killing

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ advised believers regarding times of widespread bloodshed:

“During the era of killing, the believer will protect himself by withdrawing from harm, keeping his tongue and hand away from people…”

And in another narration:

“Worship during the time of widespread killing is like emigrating to me.”

— Sahih Muslim

When fitnah becomes widespread, the believer’s safety lies in protecting his faith, avoiding unnecessary conflict, guarding his tongue, increasing worship, and strengthening his relationship with Allah.

Our Reality Mirrors the Prophecy

We now live in a time when:

  • Muslims are killing Muslims.
  • Blood has become cheap and honour is violated.
  • True scholars are few while confusion is widespread.
  • Earthquakes, floods, disasters, and turmoil occur with increasing frequency.
  • Souls are burdened and hearts are distracted.
  • Time appears shorter and blessings seem fewer.
  • Many of the signs foretold by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ have already manifested before our eyes.

Final Reflection

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not speak from his own desire. More than fourteen centuries ago, he described events and conditions that continue to unfold before us today.

These signs are not merely historical narrations or theoretical discussions. They are reminders intended to awaken hearts, strengthen faith, and encourage preparation for the Hereafter.

The era of al-Harj is no longer a distant prophecy. It is the reality in which we live.

The question is not whether the signs are appearing; the question is whether we are taking heed.

Let us return to Allah before it is too late. Let us increase our worship, seek beneficial knowledge, avoid fitnah, guard our tongues, and hold firmly to the rope of Allah.

May Allah Ta’ala protect us from the trials that are apparent and hidden, preserve our iman, grant us steadfastness upon the truth, and cause us to live and die as obedient Muslims.

And Allah knows best.
