During the Khilāfah of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq رضي الله عنه, Madeenah Munawwarah experienced a severe drought. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq رضي الله عنه addressed the believers one morning saying that they would receive help by the evening. The very same morning, the people of Madeenah Munawwarah got the news that Hazrat Uthmān had received a thousand camels laden with grain and food.

The merchants went to Hazrat Uthmān رضي الله عنه and informed him that they intended purchasing the grain to assist the people of Madeenah Munawwarah. Hazrat Uthmān رضي الله عنه called the merchants indoors and enquired from them as to what profit margin will they agree to buy; the merchants initially offered 20%, then 40% and eventually were prepared to pay him 50% more than what he had paid. This was their highest offer.

Hazrat Uthmān رضي الله عنه then asked whether any one of them will pay ten Dirhams for every Dirham he had paid? The merchants said that this was impossible. Hazrat Uthmān رضي الله عنه then informed them; “I want all of you to be witness that I am donating all this grain and food to the poor people of Madeenah Munawwarah.”

Such was the sheer conviction of the noble son in law of Sayyidina Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم in the rewards promised by Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله. On numerous occasions, Sayyidina Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم made duaa for Hazrat Uthmān رضي الله عنه saying; “O Allah! I am pleased with Uthmān, You also be pleased with him. O Allah! I am pleased with Uthmān, You also be pleased with him.” May Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله grant us the tawfeeq to inculcate the habit of generosity in our lives so that our wealth can be accepted for the upliftment of humanity. And may Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله reward Hazrat Uthmān رضي الله عنه immensely for showing the Ummah how to gain the pleasure of our Rabb.

آمين يارب العالمين
