“Poor Paris, I don’t know Who it will belong to…
This is a sentence pronounced by King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz to the French President Charles de Gaulle:
Dr. Maʿrouf al-Dawalibi, in his memoirs, reports this important exchange between King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz and President Charles de Gaulle. Here is a summary of the dialogue that took place:
De Gaulle said:
“Your Majesty, we hear speeches claiming that you want to throw ISRAEL into the Sea.
ISRAEL is now a reality, and no one in the world will agree to change this state of affairs.”
King Faisal replied:
“Mr. President, I am surprised by your words. Hitler occupied Paris, and this has become a fait accompli. All of France surrendered, except you. You withdrew with the British army and continued to resist this state of affairs until you triumphed. You did not accept the imposed reality, and neither did your people. I am therefore surprised that you ask me today to accept a fait accompli. Woe, Mr. President, to the Weak if he submits to the Strong.”
(During this exchange, King Faisal mentioned General de Gaulle’s principle:
“An occupation that becomes a fait accompli cannot become legitimate.”)
De Gaulle, surprised by the King’s liveliness of mind, changes his tone and says:
“Your Majesty, the JEWS say that Palestine is their land of origin, and that their ancestor ISRAEL was born there.”
King Faisal replies:
“Mr. President, I admire you because you are a religious and believing man. You certainly read the BIBLE.
Have you not read that the Jews came from Egypt as invaders, that they burned the cities, and Killed men, women and children?
How can you say that Palestine is their land when it belongs to the Arab Canaanites?
The Jews were colonizers.
You want to restore a 4,000 year old colonization carried out by Israel. Why then not restore the Colonization of France by Rome, which dates back only 3,000 years?
Should we redraw the Map of the WORLD for the benefit of the Jews and not for the benefit of Rome?
We, the Arabs, spent 2 Centuries in the South of France,
while the Jews spent only 70 years in Palestine, before being Exiled. “
De Gaulle answers:
“But they say that their father was born there. “
King Faisal retorts:
“Amazing… You currently have 150 Embassies in Paris, and many ambassadors have children who were born there. If these children later become heads of state and claim Paris as their birthright, then poor Paris, I don’t know to whom it will belong…!”
De Gaulle, silent, rings a bell and brings in Georges Pompidou, then Prime Minister, who was with Prince Sultan and Rachad Farhan.
De Gaulle then declares:
“Now I have understood the Palestinian question. Stop exporting arms to Israel.” (At the time, Israel was still fighting with French weapons, not American ones).
Dr. al-Dawalibi continues:
“We welcomed King Faisal to Dhahran on his return from this meeting. The next morning, the King summoned the Chairman of the American Tapline Oil Company, and I witnessed this conversation.
The King said:
“Any drop of oil that goes to Israel will result in a total stoppage of our exports to you.”
When the King learned that the United States had sent aid to Israel, he suspended the supply of oil, causing protests in America.
People lined up in front of gas stations, chanting:
“We want oil, not Israel!”
