Rain: A Great Mercy and Blessing from Allah
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Rain is among the greatest bounties that Allah Ta’ala bestows upon His creation. Through rain, Allah revives the earth after its death, causes crops and fruits to grow, provides water for mankind and animals, and reminds His servants of His power, mercy and kindness. For a believer, rainfall is not merely a weather phenomenon, but a manifestation of Allah’s mercy descending upon the earth.
Rain in the Noble Qur’an
Allah Ta’ala says:
“And We sent down from the sky blessed water whereby We produced gardens and grain from the harvest.”
(Surah Qaaf 50:9)
Allah Ta’ala further says:
“And it is He who sends down rain after they have despaired and spreads His mercy.”
(Surah Ash-Shuraa 42:28)
In another verse Allah Ta’ala states:
“Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and We produce therewith fruits of various colours?”
(Surah Faatir 35:27)
These verses remind us that rain is a direct manifestation of Allah’s mercy. Through it, barren lands become green, rivers flow, crops flourish and people are sustained.
Rain is a Mercy from Allah
Nabi Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) taught the Ummah to regard rain as a blessing and not merely a natural occurrence.
Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said regarding rainfall:
“We have been given rain by the grace and mercy of Allah.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
A believer therefore attributes rainfall to Allah alone and recognizes it as a sign of His compassion and care for His creation.
The Sunnah When It Rains
When rain would fall, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) would expose part of his body to it.
Sayyiduna Anas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrates:
“When it rained, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) would uncover part of his garment so that the rain would touch him.”
When asked why, he replied:
“Because it has recently come from its Lord.”
(Sahih Muslim)
This demonstrates the special connection between rainfall and the mercy of Allah.
The Du’a When Rain Falls
When rain commenced, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) would recite:
اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا
Allahumma sayyiban naafi’an
“O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Believers should make abundant du’a during rainfall, as it is a time when du’as are readily accepted.
Rain and Acceptance of Du’a
The pious predecessors regarded rainfall as a special occasion to engage in du’a and remembrance of Allah.
Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:
“Two supplications are seldom rejected: the supplication at the time of the Adhan and the supplication at the time of rain.”
(Abu Dawud)
Whenever rain falls, a Muslim should seize the opportunity to ask Allah for forgiveness, guidance, protection and success in both worlds.
