Hazrat Haajara (Radhiyallahu Anha) Between Safa and Marwa

Indeed, the story of Hazrat Haajara (Radhiyallahu anha) is one of unwavering faith, profound sacrifice, and divine mercy—a timeless lesson for every Muslimah embarking on the sacred journey of Hajj. As you prepare for this spiritual voyage, let us revisit her heart-wrenching yet triumphant moments between Safa and Marwa, where her struggle became the foundation of a beloved ritual in Islam.

The Agony of a Mother’s Heart

Imagine the desolate valley of Makkah—no water, no shelter, no sign of life. Ibraheem (Alaihis Salaam), following Allah’s command, leaves his beloved wife and infant son in this barren land with only a pouch of dates and a dwindling supply of water. When the water runs out, Haajara (Radhiyallahu anha) watches helplessly as her baby, Isma’eel (Alaihis Salaam), writhes in thirst, his cries weakening as if nearing death.

A mother’s heart cannot bear such suffering. In desperation, she climbs Mount Safa, scanning the horizon for help—nothing. She descends, gathers her strength, and runs towards Marwa, her eyes searching, her soul pleading. Seven times she races between the two hills, her hope unbroken, her trust in Allah unshaken.

The Divine Response: Zamzam’s Miracle

At her weakest moment, when exhaustion and despair threaten to overwhelm her, Jibreel (Alaihis Salaam) appears. With a stroke of his wing (or heel), Zamzam bursts forth—a miraculous spring that quenches her thirst, revives her child, and becomes a symbol of Allah’s infinite mercy.

“Do not fear perishing,” the angel assures her, “for here shall stand the House of Allah, built by this child and his father. Allah will never abandon its people.”

The Eternal Legacy: Sa’ee in Hajj & Umrah

Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:

“That was the origin of the Sa’ee of people between Safa and Marwa.” (Bukhari)

Every step you take between these two hills is a reenactment of Hazrat Haajara’s (Radhiyallahu anha) struggle and trust in Allah. Her perseverance teaches us that no hardship is in vain when endured for Allah’s sake. Her faith reminds us that help comes when all seems lost.

A Message for the Hujjaaj of Today

As you perform Sa’ee, remember:

  • Your struggle is sacred. Just as Hazrat Haajara’s pain transformed into an eternal act of worship, your efforts in Hajj—fatigue, heat, crowds—are steps towards divine reward.
  • Allah never abandons those who trust in Him. When Hazrat Haajara surrendered to Allah’s decree, He granted her a miracle that still flows today.
  • Every hardship in the path of Allah carries a blessing. The running between Safa and Marwa was once a mother’s desperate search—now, it is a pillar of your Hajj, infused with barakah.

Du’aa for the Hujjaaj

“O Allah, just as You answered Hazrat Haajara in her moment of need, ease our struggles, accept our Hajj, and grant us the honour of drinking from the spiritual Zamzam of Your mercy. Ameen.”

May your Hajj be accepted, your sins forgiven, and your faith strengthened—just as the legacy of Hazrat Haajara (Radhiyallahu anha) continues to inspire generations.
