🔥 Fire Safety in the Sunnah: A Prophetic Model of Preventive Care

In the blessed teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we find not only spiritual guidance but also practical advice for everyday living. Among these are his timeless instructions on fire safety and household protection, which remain deeply relevant in our modern homes.

🕯️ Do Not Leave Fire Burning at Night

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not leave fire burning in your houses when you sleep.”
(Agreed upon – Bukhari and Muslim)

This hadith reminds us of the importance of extinguishing all sources of fire before going to bed. In the time of the Prophet ﷺ, this referred to oil lamps and small fires. Today, it extends to stoves, candles, heaters, and even electrical appliances.

🔥 Fire Is an Enemy

A house burned down in Madinah one night. When the Prophet ﷺ was informed, he said:
“Fire is an enemy to you. When you go to sleep, put it out.”
(Agreed upon)

The Prophet ﷺ personified fire as an “enemy” to emphasize its potential danger. This powerful metaphor urges us to treat fire with caution and respect.

🏠 Household Precautions and Spiritual Protection

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Cover up containers and tie up water-skins. Lock the door and put out the lamp. Shaytan does not open a water-container, open a door, nor remove a cover. If one of you can find nothing except a piece of food to place over his container together with mentioning Allah’s name, he should do that. A mouse can set a house alight around its inhabitants.”
(Muslim)

Say Bismillah when doing:

  • Covering food and water protects from contamination.
  • Locking doors ensures physical security.
  • Putting out lamps prevents accidental fires.
  • Mentioning Allah’s name offers spiritual protection.
  • Even a mouse, as the Prophet ﷺ warned, can cause a fire — a reminder of how small things can lead to great harm.

🌙 A Sunnah for Every Home

These narrations reflect the Prophet’s ﷺ holistic concern for our well-being — spiritually, physically, and emotionally. They encourage mindfulness, responsibility, and the integration of faith into daily life.

O Allah, make our homes safe and tranquil, and protect us from all harm.
